Q+A: Sandra Villabolos

Sandra Villalobos creates fantastical portraits with pops of watercolor paint and refined details in ink and colored pencil.

How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as stylized human subjects that dip into the world of fantasy.

What subjects do you enjoy working on?

I would definitely say human (mainly female) subjects, though I am working to diversify my subjects to not only males but animals as well.

What medium(s) do you work in?

Watercolor always seems to be my go-to medium to work with as a base; afterwards I define and detail with color pencils and refinish the ink lining.

How has your process evolved?

My process has evolved quite a bit; I used to draw in a tiny little black book that couldn’t take the weight of watercolor. So back in those days I would start with a simple light sketch and end with color pencils (if I even included color at all).

What got you started creating art?

I would say my own introverted-ness got me creating art. Staying inside your room with a love for music really gets the creative juices flowing.

What artists influence your work?

Artists on social media, especially YouTube and Instagram. I have always sought advice from the YouTuber Mark Crilley and have grown up watching daily vlogs of YouTuber Baylee Jae; both have been such an inspiration to me and have definitely influenced my art.
