James Simon

James’ love of High Renaissance art shows in his richly detailed pen and ink drawingseven if the subject matter is a little more contemporary.

How would you describe your style?

Modern Expressionist… I work quickly, so there is an energy to each piece.

What subjects do you enjoy working on?

Portraiture mostly, but anything representational, so the viewer can relate to the subject.

What medium(s) do you work in?

I can work in about any medium except watercolor. Pencil is my first love and drawing with a fountain pen has been my latest obsession.

How has your process evolved?

I’ve tried to let go of any planning or preconceived outcomes so the work just happens. I do not like to labor over anything as I want there to always be a freshness.

What got you started creating art?

I’m 53. I first picked up a pencil and drew at 2… It is what I do… daily. It’s in my blood.

What artists influence your work?

My first love is the Italian Renaissance, but I have read about and studied many artists all the way up to modern illustrators (who do not get the credit they deserve).

"It's good day when you see something beautiful and create something beautiful."
