Q & A: Alex Chavez

Alex Chavez hails from Taos, NM, where he works exclusively with oil paints on canvas and wood. His lush, expressionistic portraits are perfect for a portrait of a loved one.

How would you describe your style?

Figurative and expressive. Impressionist Realism. Painterly and spontaneous.

What subjects do you enjoy working on?

The human figure. Particularly in costume. And in snapshot-type poses, as if the subject is not aware of the camera.

What medium(s) do you work in?

Oil on wood and canvas.

How has your process evolved?

I now use a limited palette of professional-grade oil paints. I also have been using large, firm, flat brushes. I work in two-four hour sessions, then let the paint dry a little overnight.

What got you started creating art?

I suppose positive reinforcement of my drawings when I was a child. I have been an artist all my life.

What artists influence your work?

Seargent, Fechin, Goya, Manet, Picasso, Bacon.
